Do I have to be a law student to volunteer at CLASSIC?
Most students at CLASSIC are law students. The main way for law students to participate at CLASSIC are:
- Through the experiential, clinical law program, and/or
- As a project volunteer through Pro Bono Students Canada.
CLASSIC also hosts social work practicum students. We have also worked with other inter-disciplinary students in the past, and options to do so are considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on CLASSIC's capacity to work with and oversee volunteers.
How do I volunteer with CLASSIC?
During the school year, law students do not apply directly to CLASSIC to volunteer. Instead, they must apply through Pro Bono Students Canada (PBSC) at the University of Saskatchewan. The applications are typically due in mid-September. Watch for PBSC information sessions at the beginning of the year. They also post the project list on their website or near their office in the College of Law. Here, you can read about each of CLASSIC's programs and how you can get involved.
For volunteering during the summer, please contact CLASSIC directly (you do not need to apply through PBSC) to see if we are accepting summer volunteers.
What program(s) can I volunteer for?
Student volunteer opportunities vary depending on CLASSIC's need and capacity to oversee volunteers. Often CLASSIC will accept volunteers for the Walk-in Advocacy Clinic, Legal Advice Clinic, and special projects, such as Community Legal Education, Project ID, etc.
For more information on those programs, please go to the What We Do page.
I did not get accepted to volunteer at CLASSIC or into the particular program I applied for. Can I volunteer with CLASSIC outside of PBSC?
Due to CLASSIC's limited resources and our commitment to PBSC during the year, CLASSIC cannot take on more law student volunteers than the spots we have available through PBSC during the school year. Please consider applying again next year to PBSC.
How many volunteer hours am I required to complete?
PBSC requires students to volunteer between 3 to 5 hours per week. Some of CLASSIC projects do not easily fit within a regular weekly volunteer schedule. Scheduling is explained on the PBSC project list.
Are there other ways I can get involved with CLASSIC besides volunteering during the school year?
You can take the clinical law course in second or third year. The course description may change from time to time. The most recent description will always be contained in the College of Law's course description calendar.
